Fix Problems or patch up the symptoms?
As a Chiropractor in Livermore, I am use to dealing with pain as a main complaint. Whether it is the lower back, neck, headaches, carpal tunnel, knee pain or muscle pain, pain has its way of affecting our lives. For many of us, we can adapt to chronic pain and learn to live with it. Although getting “use to” pain is an easy route because it allows us to not have to go see a doctor or change our lifestyle, it is very dangerous to learn to live with pain. Pain has its way of interfering with quality of life and eventually allows the actual problem that creates aches and pains to become worse and often times permanent.
So the question becomes whether it is easier to patch up a problem or to actually fix it? I know the answer seems like its common sense but is it? I ask new patients this very question because most of their life they have just “patched up” the problem. What I mean by “patching” is that when something is painful, people tend to look for a quick fix such as a pain pill. As we take pain relieving drugs, it really doesn’t act as a fix at all since it only masks symptoms and the body becomes dependent on taking those pills to be pain free. Instead, I believe in looking at the cause of aches and pain and finding solutions in correcting and treating the injury so that my patients can live a pain-free life naturally without covering up symptoms over and over again. Correction might take more time, cost more money but in the long run it saves the agony of surgery or living in constant pain, it saves money in all the pain medications that a person will end up taking for the rest of their life and the invaluable cost of increased vitality and quality of life is of course priceless.
