So, I did something I hadn’t done in years. I went running. Actually, I entered a 5K with the rest of my family as a fundraiser for Dougherty Valley High Schoolin San Ramon. I do a fair amount of cardio exercise but it’s mostly elliptical trainer and bicycle because it’s easier on the knees. I’ve had really good results this way. I try to protect my knees. An injury to my knees would severely alter my fitness routine and my goals. I simply can’t have that happen. It’s the constant pounding from running on hard surfaces that concerns me. Many years ago most of the information on joint stresses from distance running indicated that there was no reason to take up running after the age of 50. Hey, I’m part of that demographic. Fast walking, great! Just walking as any speed was very good but running after 50 was totally unnecessary. So, I finally had another excuse for not running.
Well, the latest studies now show there is great benefit to getting out there and hitting the pavement, especially for the over 50 crowd. Who knew? I suppose all those who continued to run well after 50 had a pretty good idea that it was working for them. And it’s not just the knees. All the weight bearing joints (Hips, ankles and spine) seem to do better with distance running in moderation. A certain amount of stress on the joint actually serves to toughen and condition the bone and the cartilage and ligament which will lead to decreased possibility of injury. All the more reason to add running to my routine. I finished 13th in my age group (out of 19). Not bad for my first competition in many years. Now I’ll start knocking the minutes off my time and make a better showing the next time.
One of the best and most comprehensive web sites I’ve come across for running and fitness in general is Runnersworld.com. It’s a great resource.
