Quick on-the-go easy breakfast choices for you to stay healthy and fit
Most people have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I feel that breakfast is not just the most important meal but what you eat for breakfast will set the tone for your day and for your diet.
When you first wake up in the morning, your body has just arisen from a state of fasting. It is important that within the first hour of being awake that you should be consuming a combination of protein and carbohydrates. When someone skips breakfast and eats several hours later in the day, their body will continue in a fasting state so that when they do put something into their body (i.e. lunch), the body will store most of the calories into fat storage for a future time of fasting. This process not only slows down the metabolism but it makes it extremely difficult for someone to lose weight and be healthy.
The most common excuse I hear from clients who skip breakfast is that they didn’t have time to eat anything or make anything in the morning. Since I leave the house before 5 am every weekday to get to my first client, I can understand the time issue. For this reason the following is a list of some quick and healthy breakfast choices:
- Protein shakeor protein powder (100% Whey protein preferably) mixed with some fruit and milk/water. This is my favorite and most popular option as I can drink this on the go and it takes a minute to get ready.
- Instant oatmeal package with protein. This is an option that is easy to take with you too as you only need to add hot water to make the oatmeal and water to the protein powder. This is a great combination of the right type of carbohydrates and protein.
- Low fat Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is superior to regular yogurt because it has less calories and more protein than regular yogurt. Try plain Greek yogurt and add a little honey and fruit to take with you on the go.
- Low fat cottage cheese. This is the healthiest cheese option for those who are trying to slim down. Cottage cheese mixed with apple, blueberries or some other type of fruit you enjoy is an excellent choice which has a lot of protein without too many calories.
- Protein bar. This choice is my least favorite but it is still a better choice than a drive-through or no breakfast at all. Choosing a protein bar that does not have too much sodium and fat is important. My favorite choice is the balance bar.
- Egg whites and whole wheat toast. This breakfast does take a few more minutes but is the type of breakfast that will keep you going for several hours and is natural.
