What is the best time for you to do cardio?
As a personal trainer in Livermore, I get asked this question all the time from my clients who’s goal is to lose body fat and get into shape. There is no secret that eating right, lifting weights and preforming cardiovascular routines will equate to losing weight and keeping healthy. But with the crazy lifestyles that most of have, it can be helpful to work smarter instead of harder.
From training clients the last 10 years here is what I have found:
- In order to burn fat, it is important to do some type of cardiovascular exercise 4-5 times per week
- Preforming cardio after lifting weights is the best time for maximum fat burn
- It is more efficient to perform cardio in the morning than in the evening as it jump starts the metabolism
- Of all cardio machines, jogging or running on the treadmill will burn fat the quickest
- To prevent a plateau in weight loss it is important to change up cardio routines by changing intensity, speed and type of cardio from regular routines at least twice per week
Lifting weights before preforming cardio will burn up the sugar reserves in the blood stream so that when doing cardio, the body will burn up fat stores.
The important thing to remember despite the above rules is preforming cardio regularly with a healthy diet and weight lifting is more crucial than the time of day your preform it. Ultimately, the weight loss equation will not change which is the the number of calories burned versus consumed on a daily basis will effect weight.
