”I don’t need to see a Chiropractor, the aches and pains are normal”
This past weekend we were a part of the Home and Garden Show at the Alameda County Fairgroundsin Pleasanton. Over the course of the last 5 years, I have participated in many of these types of events but it still never ceases to amaze me how people perceive their health. Many people passed our booth where we were giving out complimentary spine checks and scoliosis screens and took advantage of giving into their curiosity about their spine and Chiropractic. But many others passed by and would make comments on how good they felt or how they know how “crooked” their spine was.
I would ask some of those people who would comment about having a bad spine and not needing a check-up, what they were doing about it? Many responded, “just dealing with it”, or “I’m seeing my medical doctor and getting cortisone injections“. It made me wonder, how many millions of people are just “dealing with it” and why? To me, it’s like being cold and not zipping up your jacket, or having your hand in a fire and not taking it off. I know it sounds a bit extreme, but is it? Why would someone want to live with pain and function improperly if they don’t have to? I know I can not answer this for anyone else, but I wonder if it is fear of finding out that there is something wrong or if people just think it is normal to have aches and pains. Either way, I remembered how sick our community is; sickened with improperly functioning joints and possibly nerves.
There was another group too that bewildered me who would say, “knock on wood, I have not ever needed to see a chiropractor!“. It makes me think of the person who says, “knock on wood, I have never needed to see a dentist”. What do you think their teeth would look like? In my mind, I think of the Austin Powers movie where his teeth are all corroded and dark yellow. Maybe because we can see the bone in our mouths we pay better attention then the bones in our backs. However, there are several people who have experienced the miracles of chiropractic and realize that just as important of practicing good dental hygiene, it is important to practice good spinal hygiene too.
In any case, this weekend at the fairgrounds reminded me how poorly educated the general public are about their spines and health. I also understand that I can only help those who want my help, but I will continue to try to bring education to as many as I can about their health and spines.
