What to look for when finding a great Chiropractor

Hundreds of thousands of people rave about the results with Chiropractic care and several thousands either have had a negative experience or have heard many negative things about the profession. The truth is, there is good an bad in any profession.  Just as you might find a phenomenal attorney, the next one down the street might not be as knowledgeable or provide the services to your caliber.  As such, it is important to know what to look out for when finding a Chiropractor to help you with your spine and nervous system health.

The following are the top 7 things to be sure you look for when choosing a Chiropractor:

  1. They preform a thorough examination. This is the most crucial factor in finding a good Chiropractor or any kind of Doctor as the person who evaluates your condition and your health more thoroughly will be able to find out more about your condition, be able to better diagnose and therefore, treat.
  2. Take X-rays.  The saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words” is applicable to X-rays. There are times where I have examined a patient who had no complaints of an area and after reading their X-rays their condition.  Sometimes, the body on the outside won’t present all the things are taking place on the inside.
  3. Take time to study your exam and X-ray findings and spend time to explain and show you x-rays.  I usually spend a couple of hours to mark up X-rays and evaluate with examination findings so that I can get a handle on how to safely and effectively move their joints.  By giving an adjustment right after an exam and glancing at the X-rays, things can be missed.
  4. Give you options for your care.  I believe that a doctor should present different goals for treatment.  Pain relief; stabilization, rehabilitation, and correction so that you can decide what would work best for your health goals.
  5. Focus on correction and rehabilitation instead of just pain relief.  Finding a Chiropractor who works on correcting a problem is key in finding a great doctor.  To just be pain-free can also be obtained with certain pain-relieving medications but to have the spine corrected (if possible) is a higher caliber of care.
  6. Offers various payment options.  Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world where our insurance will cover all the health services that we need. Because of this, the costs of health care continues to rise and add challenges to many patients who need care.  The Chiropractor should help to offer different payment options including certain discounts, insurance, monthly payment options to allow for you to make your treatment affordable.
  7. Offers various types of chiropractic adjustment techniques.  What most patients do not know is that there are several different techniques to provide adjustments.  Some Chiropractors only use their hands, some use muscle testing, some use an activator (a tool to adjust the spine), some use muscle therapy and some techniques do not even involve touching the spine (N.E.T.).  It is important to find out in advance what type of adjustments they provide and make sure that they offer a few types so that they can use the technique that makes you most comfortable.

All good points, but I think you should also note how in your practice you have incorporated personal training and physical therapy for rehabilitation and long-term results.
