Car Accident Injuries

car accidentInjuries Caused By Car Accidents

I had a patient come into the office today who was involved in a rear-end collision over the weekend.  He was not sure if he had any injuries but wanted to check to make sure. This is one of the smartest things a person can do. Often times people walk away from ‘fender-benders’ without a scratch.  This would obviously lead them to believe they have suffered no apparent injuries. However, this is usually not the case.

When there is substantial damage to a vehicle that means that the force of the energy was transferred to the car. These types of accidents will more likely cause scratches, bruises, and maybe even broken bones.

When there is less damage to a vehicle, the impact of the force is usually transferred to the contents inside the car, i.e the driver and passengers. This type of accident will result in less scratches and bruises but more ligament, muscle and spinal alignment issues (whiplash).

The following are some symptoms that can occur with a soft tissue injury several days after an accident:

  • Neck discomfort
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Shoulder aches
  • Tight muscles
  • Decreased appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of concentration
  • Moodiness

My recommendation is to always be on the safer side by getting your spine checked by a chiropractor after a car accident to avoid future pain or chronic conditions.

Don – You are so right. We often forget how fragile we are or how a subtle misalignment can create havoc. I could tell you about the time I sprained my ankle and didn’t get it tended to properly…. or the body surfing accident…

Both required months of rehab when my body finally screamed – HEY, there’s something out of whack here bozo!
